During the Summer of 1968, CIM operated from San Pedro, CA while supporting First Fleet REFTRA.

Upon completing a "tin can" UNREP off the coast of Mexico about sunset, CIM headed ENE for her night steaming area near San Clemente Island.

An aircraft carrier off CIM's port beam was conducting flight operations. Despite contrary appearances, CIC reported an SBDR (steady bearing decreasing range) track closing at over 50 knots.

Since CIM's Skipper was not in his cabin, the conning officer heeded over-riding OOD-Rule#1 "Never cross the bow of an aircraft carrier!"

Completing a hard turn to starboard took about five minutes to execute due to CIM's 25,000 ton inertia (advance & transfer) at 15 knots.

When this 120 degree evasion maneuver was done, the USS Constllation passed parallel to CIM's port-side at a range of only 1000 yards . . . way too close for the embarked admiral's comfort!

His terse semaphore light message: "Your seamanship NOT appreciated"

Junior Officer (JO) "Lessons Learned" 1 - Initial sighting assumptions can be deceptive. 2 - Allow adequate lead time to complete critcal maneuvers. 3 - Be ready to assume a "scapegoat" role as needed to reconcile standing orders that don't fit your current situation. 4 - Be thankful for prior scenario-based simulator training on making effective decisions under high-stress conditions.

Shiphandling and Advanced Shiphandling. Shiphandling training at MSI Norfolk and MSI San Diego consists of a period of time during which a simulator "suite" is assigned to a Commanding Officer to facilitate the ship's training program.

The Navy Training Guide which is provided to each ship (also available by email from MSI Norfolk) describes ten (10) standard training exercises around which a ship can fashion it's own usage of the simulators during its availability.

These exercises include Open ocean, Inbound and Outbound channel transits, Mooring to and Unmooring from a pier, Anchoring, Buoy mooring, Underway replenishment, Man Overboard and other Emergency Maneuvers.

The simulators include the ability to train the full bridge and CIC/CDC team including lookouts, bearing takers, helmsman and navigators as well as the OOD and conning officer. Shiphandling training at MSI Newport consists of a set curriculum of basic through advanced evolutions with the primary focus on mooring and unmooring from a pier, underway replenishment PLUS emergency shiphandling.
