Auxiliary ships provide maintenance, fuel, supplies, towing, and other services to warships.
There are four main kinds of auxiliary ships: (1) underway replenishment ships, (2) fleet support ships, (3) sealift ships, and (4) experimental, research, and surveying ships. Service craft generally are smaller vessels that provide services similar to those of auxiliary ships.
Underway replenishment (UNREP) ships provide fuel, ammunition, food, spare parts, and other materials to warships at sea. UNREP ships transfer cargo to moving ships using lines rigged between the ships.
Fleet support ships provide maintenance and towing services to warships. Destroyer tenders, submarine tenders, and repair ships have machine shops that can repair the engines, weapons, and electrical systems of warships. Oceangoing tugs provide towing services to warships.
Sealift ships carry cargo from port to port but cannot land their cargo on beaches. Unlike UNREP ships, they cannot transfer cargo to moving ships.
Experimental, research, and surveying ships support warship development and operations. Experimental ships test hull designs, weapons, and other equipment. Research ships are used in studying the ocean and the ocean floor. Surveying ships map the ocean floor and coastlines.
