Some career Captain needed six months or so of Sea Duty to qualify for his next promotion. We were in Jensen, Korea waiting for orders to return to the states for drydock and overhaul. The career Captain recognized a good loophole when he saw one and asked to be assigned to our ship, the USS Cimarron, AO-22. He came on board a few days before we set sail. Shortly after he took command of our ship, a Cruiser came into port and proceeded past us to a berth close-in to shore. In spite of the SOPA (Senior Officer Present Aboard) flag displayed prominently from our mast, the cruiser did not salute. A few days later the cruiser came along side for refueling. The hoses were passed across to the cruiser crew and while they were beginning to secure the hoses on their end, the fueling pumps on the Cimarron started uh.. prematurely. The decks of the cruiser were awash with fuel oil. Eventually the refueling was completed and the cruiser returned to its berth. A day or so later the cruiser steamed past us on its way to open sea. It saluted!
